Beryllium gimbal for Geosynchronous Imaging
Fourier Transform Spectrometer (GIFTS)
http://oea.larc.nasa.gov/PAIS/GIFTS.html
The above is the link for more info on the project.
A housing of pure beryllium was fabricated by dip brazing. Epner's task
was to polish this priceless construction and coat it with 25 microns
high phosphorus electroless nickel followed by 0.5 microns Laser Gold.
Laser gold was chosen for it's theoretically low emissivity and helps
mantain the themal stability of this critical instrument.
